Changing Gear - YHA invests £270,000 in cycling facilities

Changing Gear - YHA invests £270,000 in cycling facilities

The future is two-wheeled. Here at YHA we’ve always worked hard to make our hostels the perfect fit for active travellers, and we’re delighted to announce that we’re investing a total of £270,000 in creating new and improved cycling facilities at dozens of our most bike-friendly properties.

The money – of which £161,500 came from the Peak District National Park Authority – is going directly towards providing cyclists of all ages with even more reasons to get out and explore.

Welcome to YHA Cardiff

The state-of-the-art YHA Cardiff Central was unveiled in March, offering 320 beds in a brilliant central location and occupying what was once a four-star hotel. Well suited to everyone from independent travellers and school parties to nightlife-lovers and conference groups, it’s a property that we’re hugely proud of. Look out for the fantastic handpainted murals in the bar area.

DofE Gold Residential - The transformation of YHA Sherwood Forest

DofE Gold Residential - The transformation of YHA Sherwood Forest

In September, I was lucky enough to join the fantastic team at YHA Sherwood Forest as a volunteer. Another volunteer called Catherine and I went to volunteer as Group Activity Leaders leading a DofE Gold Residential. There were 14 enthusiastic DofE’ers embarking on the final leg of their DofE journey. It was great to see the group dynamics change through-out the course of the week. When the young people arrived, it’s fair to say they were all a little quiet.

We at YHA are fortunate to have a huge variety of locations across England and Wales, but a few of them have secrets buried deep in almost forgotten histories. This Halloween, why not try some real ghost hunting instead of mere trick or treating?

Psst. Hey, you. Listen in. Eyes alert. We’re on the hunt for teenage super-spies. And your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to help us discover the next Alex Rider.

It’s now fifteen years since award-winning author Alex Horowitz released Stormbreaker, the first in the best-selling Alex Rider series. To mark the occasion we’ve launched a new Action Adventure Package for young undercover secret agents (or schoolchildren, as the uninitiated might think of them).
