Borrowdale enjoys a reputation as the most beautiful valley in the Lake District. There are many outdoor activities available with many low and high level walks locally, watersports on Derwentwater and swimming in the local rivers in summer. Keswick, 7 mile away, has plenty of outdoor shops, a swimming pool, a theatre, cinema and several small museums.

Walking - There are fantastic walks starting from just outside the door ranging from easy strolls along the River Derwent to more challenging High Fell walks. Scafell Pike, Great Gable, Glaramara and Dalehead are all within easy reach and a short drive will take you to within reach of Pillar, Helvellyn, Skiddaw, Blencathhra and the other Lake District Classic peaks. Climbing - Borrowdale has a superb range of routes from easy scrambles to modern test pieces. For high mountain crags, Gillercombe Buttress and The Great Napes are easily reached from the head of the valley.
Orienteering/Children’s trail – YHA Borrowdale has it’s own small orienteering trail. There is a good selection of orienteering courses and trails at the Whinlatter Forestry Park.
