Walking
You can walk direct onto the northern moor from YHA Okehampton and you can buy several suggested walking routes and cards from reception.  These routes take you onto the high moor where stone circles, bronze-age huts, medieval deserted villages and old mining sites can all be seen.
Cafes and Bars
Although YHA Okehampton is licensed and offers good home-cooked food, there are other facilities in town, including three cafes (open during the day), six pubs (some offering food until 8.30pm) and three supermarkets (Somerfield, Waitrose and Lidl).

Attractions
New Carlton Cinema is in the old market hall, with a licensed screen, leather settees and individual chairs.  See the latest films in comfort.
Okehampton museum is housed in a 19th Century Mill and tells the story of how people have lived, worked and played on and around Dartmoor through the centuries. With interactive exhibits and models, visits can be organised for groups during the evening.
Okehampton Castle - Step back into the past with a visit to this dramatic castle. Administered by English Heritage it was mentioned in the doomsday book and has a fine variety of ghostly stories.
Dartmoor Railway - Just across the platform, the Dartmoor Railway Station has been renovated back to its former glory days of Southern Railway and provides a programme of steam and diesel excursions. The timetable varies throughout the year. There is a small display in the Railway Building at Meldon with pictures of the quarry in the past.
Finch Foundry (National Trust) at Sticklepath is about 10 minutes drive from Okehampton. This is an old foundry using water power, mainly making agricultural tools. On certain days you can see a shovel being made as the foundry is still operational and was working commercially until the 1960's. In the gardens is a small tea shop.

Further a field, make a visit to one of the last castles built at Castle Drogo (15 minutes), take a walk along Lydford Gorge and see the White Lady waterfall (15 minutes) or drive to the coast at Bude to go surfing and eat some of the best Cornish pasties.  The centre of Dartmoor, with the High Moor Visitor Centre, is about 45 minutes drive, but takes you to some wonderful remote areas.  The Eden Project is about 45 minutes drive from YHA Okehampton, and well worth a day visit.  RHS Rosemoor Garden has a wonderful garden, and shows how a field can be changed in just a few years. The walled vegetable and fruit garden is well worth seeing.
