Barnard Castle is a lively and bustling market town.  Regular markets, speciality shops, restaurants, bars and tea rooms make it a perfect place to spend quality time enjoying retail therapy, browsing for gift ideas and for all manner of refreshments light and gourmet.  Steeped in history, the town's architecture is predominantly 16th and 17th century.  Known locally as Barney, the town has been recognised nationally as one of the 50 most historically and architecturally important towns in Britain.  The remains of the Castle, built in 1150 and once a Norman stronghold, has Royal associations and features a 14th century round tower.  The centre boasts all the qualities of a market town with cobbled market place, Market Cross, formerly the town gaol and the Chateau-like Bowes Museum built in 1869 which holds an internationally important collection of paintings, furniture and porcelain.

Alternatively, less than 7 miles away is the stunningly spectacular High Force Waterfall, reputed to be the highest unbroken fall of water in England.

There are lots of full and half day walks, many direct from the door.  On site Mountain Bike hire (adult size) available on request in advance.  Plenty of scenic rides direct from the door for all ages and capabilities.  Kayaking available upon request in advance alongside abseiling, guided gorge-walking, raft building and family 'tresure hunt' challenges to coax the kids away from the Play Stations.

Teesdale Sailing Club is located at Grassholme Reservoir in the heart of Teesdale, 'England's best kept secret'.  The club enjoys 140 acres of excellent sailing water amidst some beautiful countryside.
