There are 5 RSPB reserves in the area including the internationally important RSPB Minsmere. During Summer evenings we often lead walks on to Blaxhall Heath to look for nightjars, and have had a 100% success rate for the last two years. Around the local area you may also see Woodlark, Woodcock, Turtle Dove, Nightingale, Barn Owl and Little Owl. Fallow Deer including a white stag, Badger, Fox and Otter have all been seen locally. Do be careful if walking on Blaxhall Heath as there are a number of Adders as well as Grass Snake.

For cyclists the Suffolk Coastal Route passes the hostel and National Cycle route 1 passes within 1 mile. Cycle hire available locally.

Whilst not demanding, walking the local footpaths will give you varied sights and very few people.

As Mike Weedon from Birdwatching magazine said when he visited the hostel ‘This is a truly beautiful spot, with the kind of silence you can only find in a deeply rural landscape’

This area is one of the driest and sunniest in the country and the incredible light and big skies have been an inspiration to countless artists including Constable and Turner.

Come and visit one of the most unspoilt corners of the country yet it's only one and a half hours from the M25. But remember, don’t tell everyone else.
