Digging a snow hole, detecting an avalanche, pacing and timing… just a handful of techniques you can learn on YHA’s Hillwalking and Mountaineering breaks to improve your confidence and skills. Safety and navigation breaks could help improve your skills and give you the confidence to get out and embrace the elements. Alternatively just join us for a walking break.

Homemade Mountain Movie Awards

Live For The Outdoors and the Kendal Mountain Festival launch the film making competition for the masses.

Film makers armed with camcorders, digital cameras or even mobile phones are invited to enter the mountain movie competition, in which you could ultimately win an all expenses paid trip to Everest Base Camp.

Walkers and climbers who capture moving images in the spirit of fun, experimentation and the sheer pleasure of sharing a day on the hill are invited to enter online at www.livefortheoutdoors.com/HMMA.

The only conditions of the competition are that films must be three minutes or less, shot on or about the mountains and contain all original work.

There are many YHA locations which would make the perfect base from which to perfect your film – be inspired by our best selection of wild and remote properties or simply search accommodation.

Survival Skills (18+)

Follow in the footsteps of Ray Mears and learn survival skills.  Learn how to light fires, make ovens and then use one to cook, collect water, build shelters and wild camping. The programme will include a wild camp on Dartmoor.
