We also provide courses at our climbing wall at YHA Okehampton, so whether you’re a beginner seeking to build your confidence, or a more experienced climber aiming to improve your skills outdoors, you won’t be disappointed by the variety of courses we have on offer.

On The Rocks

Helvellyn

This is a Rock Climbing course suitable for beginners to the sport and for those with some experience who want to improve their skills on multi-pitch routes. The course is also suitable for those with experience of hill walking who want to try more challenging mountaineering routes requiring knowledge of climbing techniques and using a rope. You’ll get expert tuition which will give the basic skills you need to climb in safety on classic rock climbing and mountaineering routes.  In the Lake District we have some of the finest mountaineering terrain in the UK. It provides a near perfect environment for learning the skills you’ll need to climb, not only here in the Lakes, but also Scotland and further a field.  We cover all the skills training you’ll need up to Intermediate level including:  climbing techniques on rock and mixed ground, use of ropes and belay systems, grading of climbs, route choice, route finding, using guide books and mountain hazards.


The price includes two nights accommodation at Helvellyn YHA and all meals (including packed lunches and a free flask filling service) starting with breakfast on the Saturday morning and finishing with afternoon tea on Sunday.  Please note that the evening meal on Friday (19:00hrs) is not included in the price but can be booked in advance and paid for on arrival if required.

All technical equipment and tuition is by Summitreks team of fully qualified instructors.


Please note that transport is not included in the price.  Participants are expected to arrange their own transport to YHA Helvellyn and for the short journeys to the access points for the days walking/scrambling on Sunday. It’s usual for car sharing to be arranged.

Learn to Rock Climb for Novices

This introduction to rock climbing in the Lake District will enable you to get to grips with the basics, starting with single pitch climbing on the Saturday, and multi-pitch climbing on Sunday, in the hands of experts. Intermediate rock climbing Coniston

This course is designed for those with some experience of rock climbing who wish to improve their rope skills, climbing ability and possibly learn to lead.
You may have spent a winter in a wall, experienced real rock and want to know more. You may have been climbing for some time but self taught and would like to know some safer methods of climbing.
Under excellent instruction and a high student staff ratio we will focus on the needs of the students and spend lots of time climbing.

Introduction to Climbing 16+

Edale

The Peak is widely recognised as the Mecca for climbers. This weekend sets out to maximise climbing time and introduce participants to all aspects of climbing. All equipment and training is provided, no experience is required.

Intermediate climbing (learn to lead) 16+

Edale

This is a technically intensive course that utilises the gritstone Edges of the Peak. You will learn the essential elements of rope work to enable you to lead your first climb. This course is ideal for those who have only seconded climbs or who wish to progress from indoor climbing.

Okehampton Discovery Breaks - Rock Climbing

Okehampton

Climbing is as much about balance, flexibility and thought as pure strength and is a sport open to all. YHA Okehampton is ideally situated on the edge of Dartmoor with the local crag within walking distance as well as the large granite Tors for which the moor is famous. There are three courses suitable for families and individuals. These courses start by using the climbing wall at YHA Okehampton and progress to a range of climbing venues around Devon.  Starting with basic rope work, belaying and gear selection leaving plenty of time to put theory into practice. All courses are run by YHA Okehampton’s own experienced instructors and all safety equipment is provided. More advanced courses are also available to groups of more than six.

Price: Adults £139, under 18s £127

Price includes two nights full board accommodation, all equipment and transport and qualified instruction. The course commences on Friday at 7.30pm with an induction from your instructor and concludes around 4pm on the Sunday with a debrief.
