The early days of YHA are a fascinating story of determination and unlimited enthusiasm for a cause whose time had come.
The Spirit of YHA, a new book by Helen Maurice-Jones and Lindsey Porter to be published in September, tells the story of how early pioneers started the Youth Hostels Association and developed the ‘spirit’ of YHA.
“The movement started in Liverpool,” says Lindsey. “The first enthusiasts opened the first hostel, coined the term Youth Hostels Association, designed the first membership card, the sheet sleeping bag and opened the first chain of Youth Hostels.”
YHA developed at breathtaking speed, despite the worst economic conditions experienced for many generations.
The authors also cover the first hostels and what they were like; the experience of early wardening and working parties; and how many of the regions developed in the first five years to 1935.
“Their story became the national story as other regions started up and followed their example,” says Lindsey.
The book is beautifully illustrated with maps and photographs, many never before published.
All proceeds from sales of the book will go to YHA’s small hostels fund. Helen and Lindsey, both trustees of YHA, were determined that all the benefits from publishing the book went to YHA, to support the modern organisation and in particular small hostels.
Helen Maurice-Jones is a child of YHA, growing up at Colwyn Bay YH. She is now a National Officer and Trustee. Until recently she also managed as a volunteer, Blaencaron, Dolgoch and Tyncornel Youth Hostels. This is her fourth book.
Lindsey Porter is also a Trustee and former National Officer. Outside YHA, his main interest is local history research. He has written (or jointly written)over 40 books.
