YHA will stop using plastic wrappers for bedding packs as part of its commitment to reducing its impact on the environment, whilst at the same time continuing to ensure that the bedding given to customers is fresh and clean.
When making the decision YHA consulted with guests and members. Two thirds of those surveyed said it is important to them that YHA is committed to reducing its impact on the environment. The move will also reduce costs, contributing to ensuring that the network is financially sustainable.
The decision will take effect at the latest from 1st August 2010 with a phased approach to the change in the preceding weeks.
Details around how bedding will be bulk packed in future and received by hostels have still to be resolved. Currently guests at some Youth Hostels make their own beds using a plastic wrapped bedding pack containing a clean, freshly laundered fitted sheet, two pillowcases and a duvet cover. At other Youth Hostels beds are made for guests.
