At 6.15pm on Saturday night a small fire was discovered in a first floor toilet at YHA Cambridge and the alarm was raised. The fire brigade was called and guests were safely evacuated.
Two guests and a member of staff were in hospital overnight affected by smoke inhalation and they have now been released.
94 guests were booked for Saturday night. Some chose to make their own alternative arrangements after the incident and YHA made alternative arrangements for approximately 60.
Our first concern is the safety of our guests and YHA Cambridge will be closed until 5th July. Following a site visit today we may need to extend this period.
We will be undertaking work to put right damage caused by the fire, and by smoke and water. We are co operating with the police and fire brigade to ensure that the causes of the fire are understood and any necessary work undertaken.
We will be contacting guests due to stay at YHA Cambridge to offer them relocation to another suitable site where possible and anyone with a booking at YHA Cambridge should call 0800 0191 700 for more information.
