YHA supporters in Wales gathered together in Broad Haven at the weekend to celebrate a new programme to encourage more people, including young people, to get involved in the charity’s work.

Eleanor Burnham, Assembly Member for North Wales, and Liberal Democrat spokesperson for children and young people, attended the launch of Get Involved in Wales.

She said YHA could play an important part in tourism, which was very important to the Welsh economy and encouraged the charity to be ‘bold and proud of its work’.

YHA Head of Volunteering Crewenna Dymond said: "Get Involved in Wales offers a fantastic opportunity for both young and old to come together and make a difference in hostels and communities across Wales.”

Volunteer Coordinator for Wales, Sue Mackinnon, also a YHA trustee, said: “I have enjoyed volunteering in Wales for a number of years. It’s been fun and I have made many new friends.

“Without this voluntary work the hostels would not be working as they are now, and we need volunteers who want to muck in, have some fun and at the same time enjoy a sense of achievement in wonderful locations throughout Wales.”

During the launch event, the AM, accompanied by YHA Chairman Chris Darmon, also visited YHA Pwll Deri, near Fishguard, to witness recent improvements paid for in part by the generosity of YHA members, some of whom had also turned out to experience the hostel.

As part of the scheme, there will be a programme of events and activities for people of all ages to get involved with from Autumn 2008 – Summer 2009.
